New tariff updates and Key dates

Customs Updates Fri 28 Feb, 2025 08:10 pm

As highlighted in our previous blog post, there are several new tariffs and regulations either going into effect or under discussion that may impact your duty and tariff rates. Below, we’ve outlined the key dates and details to provide you with clarity. Please note that we’ve distinguished between confirmed effective dates and those still under consideration, as some announced measures remain fluid and subject to change.

We hope this breakdown helps you navigate these changes effectively.

Confirmed Effective Dates

  • March 7, 2025: A 10% tariff will apply to all shipments from China, including those that departed before February 1, 2025, which were previously exempt from this tariff as long as they are cleared before this date.
  • March 12, 2025: A general steel and aluminum tariff of 25% will take effect for imports from any country. Note that this does not yet include tariffs on derivative products, which currently lack an official effective date or a defined process for how value will be determined.
  • April 1, 2025: The results of the review of reciprocal tariffs will be delivered, and an assessment of measures will begin on a country-by-country basis. Public comments on this review are due by March 11, 2025.

Announced but Unofficial Dates

  • March 4, 2025: Proposed tariffs include 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada, plus an additional 10% on imports from China. For clarity, this additional 10% on China would be on top of the 10% tariff effective March 7, resulting in a total of 20% across all Chinese products (in addition to any other applicable tariffs or duties).
  • Note: These tariffs have not yet been formalized with an official signed order. According to White House sources, their implementation depends on the outcome of ongoing conversations.

We encourage you to stay in touch as these discussions evolve, and we’ll provide updates as soon as new information becomes available. If you have any questions or need assistance planning around these changes, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
